Living in Xiamen

Xiamen is a charming city of approximately 1.5 million people on the southeast coast of China. If you are looking for it on an atlas, follow the Tropic of Cancer or find Taiwan and head west!

Xiamen has a temperate climate. Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures typically running about 95F/35C in the daytime. Winters are relatively mild and damp, with the average temperature about 55F/15C. In addition, the city has a reputation for being one of the cleanest and most livable cities in China. Air and water pollution are low, and the city itself is attractive and well maintained.

Because the city is a well known vacation spot for the Chinese people and because of its status as a Special Economic Zone that attracts foreign investors, Xiamen is a pleasant blend of East and West, modern living and traditional values. As a resort town, the city boasts lovely beaches, fine hotels and a wide range of restaurants featuring both local food and Western dishes. As growing city, we also lay claim to good shopping - both in the traditional neighborhood markets and in stores like Wal-Mart and other modern shopping centers.

Of course, there are challenges. English is still relatively unknown here. Some Western goods can be difficult to find. Traffic is confusing (and sometimes hair-raising!). It can be difficult to find entertainment in English, as movies and live theater are scarce, but DVDs are cheap and plentiful, there is a good symphony orchestra, and the night life scene is lively.

On balance, it's a great place to live. There are numerous local attractions (Gulang Yu Island, Nanputuo Temple, and a lovely botanical garden, for example). Air, train, bus and ferry transportation make it easy to see the rest of the country, and the local airport has direct flights to Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore, Manila and Hong Kong - all hubs for regional and international travel.

In short, Xiamen is a wonderful city for exploring China, for learning about the Chinese people and culture, and for day-to-day living. Enjoy!
