Welcome letter from XIS Board
Dear XIS community:
My name is Mr. Yuan Yuan Deng.
I have been a Vice Chairman of the XIS Board of Directors
since 1998; and I have served as the Executive Vice
Chairman of the XIS Board of Directors since September
2002. I have been an educator for some years now, having
served as a teacher and a school administrator in middle
school and in university. I used to be the Director
of the Xiamen Municipal Educational Commission and a
National Educational Inspector. My passion for international
education continues to grow. I am proud to serve in
my current capacity here at XIS.
The XIS Board is made up of seven
board members, two of which are selected by the parents.
Under the leadership of Chairwoman Yang, the XIS Board
works hard to set up policies and to oversee school
operations. The XIS Board works diligently to cultivate
students to be caring and compassionate global citizens.
With a great deal of help and support from the community,
the Board works to promote XIS with worldwide recognition.
I am delighted to see the great
development that XIS has achieved in these past few
years. There is a great team at XIS where international
awareness and rich educational experience can be certainly
found throughout the faculty and staff. XIS is accredited
by the Western Association of School and Colleges (WASC)
and is an IB World School with authorizations in PYP,
MYP and DP. All of these achievements are closely tied
to your great support and the efforts of the school
administration, the faculty, the staff and the students.
I would like to welcome you again,
on the behalf of XIS Board of Directors, to be a member
of XIS international community. Any communication with
school administration, faculty and staff is encouraged.
Each of them would be happy to offer you any assistance
you may need. I also hope that you can continue to visit
our website to get updated information on the school.
I send my sincere thanks to everyone
for offering great care and support to XIS. I would

Dear XIS Parents, Students, Faculty and Staff:
Welcome to the website of the Xiamen International School,
one of only a handful of schools in China to be authorized
to offer all three International Baccalaureate Programs (i.e.,
PYP for Grades PreK-5, MYP for Grades 6-10 and DP for Grades
11-12)! No matter which national or international school system
our students eventually move on to, they will have had an
excellent preparation for entrance into the finest schools,
colleges and universities around the world.
XIS has been re-accredited by the Western Association of Schools
and Colleges (WASC), an international accrediting organization
founded in the United States. With accreditation by WASC and
authorization by the International Baccalaureate, founded
in Switzerland, we demonstrate our serious commitment to high
quality education. We are a full member of the Association
of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS), which
connects us with over 40 other international schools for educational,
cultural and sporting events/activities throughout China.
We are also a full member of the East Asia Regional Conference
of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). This connects us with hundreds
of other schools in southeast Asia with many benefits, including
professional development for our faculty. Finally, we hold
membership in the Association for the Advancement of International
Education (AAIE) which connects us with many hundreds of international
schools around the world helping us to stay abreast of educational
trends.
I’m very pleased to be serving my fifth (5th) year here at
Xiamen International School community as Headmaster! I was
born and educated in the United States and have earned multiple
degrees and certifications as a teacher, administrator and
headmaster/superintendent from universities in California,
New Jersey and New York. I have served as teacher in the United
States (California and New York), Saudi Arabia, the Philippines
and Austria. I have served as a principal and a headmaster/superintendent
in the United States (New York), Germany, Poland and China.
For our school community members, I extend a very warm XIS
welcome and hope you enjoy your time with us as much as we
will in having you be an important part of our school community!
Our main focus this year will be in continuing to implement
the Action Plans formed after our original Strategic Planning
in August 2007, revised in June of 2008 and now again in June
of 2009.
We are hoping to achieve our projected student enrollment
of 320 students by the end of calendar year 2009. These students
represent over 30 nations and regions from around the world!
While many of our faculty comes from the USA, we are very
proud to have faculty members from other countries (e.g.,
Australia, Canada, China, Ecuador, Korea, Philippines, Singapore
and United Kingdom). Our school board is composed of 7 representatives
of the Xiamen community, two of whom are elected parent representatives
(i.e., Mr. Thomas Brooks and Mr. Patrick Healy). Their goal,
as well as that of the entire school community, is to further
develop our school into one of the finest international schools
serving this region of the world.
Our safe and secure facilities are attractive and well-located
in the suburbs of Xiamen for transportation of students and
staff to and from school. This represents an approximate 30-40
minute ride from the center of the city. School and public
transportation make our facility accessible from all areas
of the city. Please note, however, that some of the more remote
areas of the city will mean a longer ride to and from the
school depending upon both location and traffic.
We invite you to visit our school and become an active participant
in it. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact
us and we will always be happy to assist. As a new addition
to our website, please access our first ever Annual Report
to the Community for information about our accomplishments
during SY 2008-2009!

Introduction |

| Xiamen
International School (XIS) was established in August,
1997 and is located on the southern coast of China in
Fujian Province. XIS was the first international school
in Fujian Province to be authorized by the Ministry
of Education to accept expatriate students. It is rapidly
joining the ranks of the world's finest schools according
to international school standards and employs credentialed
teachers and administrators from around the world, including
the United States, Canada, Great Britain and China.
XIS also employs local assistant teachers for each of
the elementary homerooms. The school offers a PreK-12,
high quality International Baccalaureate curriculum
to students from twenty-nine different
countries and regions including the United States, Taiwan,
Korea, Australia, England, Germany, Singapore, Hong
Kong, Malaysia ,Saudi Arabia ,Mexico and Japan. XIS
has been pleased to have high school graduating classes
since 2001.
The goal of XIS is to encourage students to become
quality-minded individuals who maintain high levels
of academic achievement while developing proficiency
in technology. In addition, our students develop an
appreciation and understanding of culture, fine arts,
and the humanities. Students are also guided to develop
attitudes and behaviors associated with maintaining
a healthy lifestyle. XIS is authorized to offer all
three levels of the International Baccalaureate program:
Primary Years (Grades PK-5), Middle Years Program (Grades
6-10) and Diploma (Grades 11-12).
XIS is accredited by the Western Association of
Schools and Colleges (WASC). Upon graduation, our students
enter colleges and universities with full acceptance
of all records and academic credits. Over 4000 schools
and institutes from the western portion of the United
States and areas of the Pacific Rim, China and Southeast
Asia have been accredited by WASC, including Stanford
University, the University of California, and the University
of Southern California.
XIS moved to its current campus in
June, 2002. The full-featured facility is over 30,000
square meters in size and includes a gymnasium, a soccer
field, a running track, three basketball courts and
an indoor swimming pool. There is also a library, science
labs, IT labs and a large cafeteria that can accommodate
all students and staff.
